Yes, you read the title right. A systematic review published in 2013 shows that playing video games can have some health benefits. Despite all of the negative stigma around them, scientists say that they have seen video games improve almost 70% of phycological therapy outcomes, nearly 60% of physical therapy outcomes, 50% of physical activity outcomes, and 42% of pain distraction outcomes.

Of course, too much of a good thing can be harmful. Spending the entire day playing video games is not good, but with this evidence, it can be seen that video games are all bad. There may be some profound benefits to playing video games occasionally. Though there is not much evidence due to recent innovations, VR or virtual reality may aid in weight loss if the game involves physical activity. So there may be more benefits than we currently have data on.

There are some potential health benefits to gain while playing video games. I have personally felt these benefits. I enjoy playing a couple of games with friends to take a break from the constant stresses of the world. If I can benefit from video games, you should too! So after a long hard day at work or school, call some friends over and have a fun stress relieving gaming session!
